Impactathon Problem Set & Data

Computer Science / Application Development Problems:

1.) Community Engagement Platform:

Many individuals, particularly high school students, face challenges in finding volunteer opportunities that resonate with their interests and fit their busy schedules. Despite their eagerness to give back to the community, the process of discovering relevant volunteer opportunities remains cumbersome and time-consuming. In this hackathon challenge, participants will tackle this issue by designing and developing a mobile app or web platform. This platform will serve as a centralized hub connecting individuals with local nonprofit organizations and community service opportunities. By leveraging user-friendly interfaces and innovative features, participants will streamline the volunteer matching process, enabling users to easily explore, sign up for, and participate in meaningful volunteer activities. Through this initiative, participants will empower individuals to engage with their communities, foster social impact, and create positive change.

2.) Student Safety Alert System:

In today's fast-paced world, ensuring the safety and well-being of students on campus is of paramount importance. However, traditional safety measures may not always provide students with the immediate support they need, especially in emergency situations. To address this critical issue, participants in this hackathon challenge will develop a mobile app specifically tailored to enhance student safety on campus. This app will enable students to swiftly and discreetly report emergencies, request assistance, and receive real-time safety alerts directly on their smartphones. By leveraging advanced technology and intuitive user interfaces, participants will create a comprehensive safety alert system that empowers students to take proactive measures to protect themselves and receive timely assistance from campus authorities when needed. Through this innovative solution, participants will contribute to fostering a safer and more secure environment for students, promoting peace of mind and ensuring a swift response to emergencies.

Data Science Problems

3.) Predictive Policing Model:

Law enforcement agencies face the ongoing challenge of effectively allocating resources to combat crime and enhance community safety. However, traditional methods often fall short in predicting and preventing criminal activity. In this hackathon challenge, participants will leverage the rich dataset reflecting reported incidents of crime in the City of Chicago from 2001 to present. This dataset, extracted from the Chicago Police Department's CLEAR (Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting) system, provides valuable insights into historical crime trends and patterns. Participants will develop a predictive policing model and create a dynamic visualization dashboard that offers actionable insights for law enforcement agencies. By analyzing this extensive dataset, participants will identify high-risk areas and times for criminal activity, empowering law enforcement to proactively address crime and ensure safer communities.

4.) Healthcare Analytics Dashboard:

Picture a healthcare system where access to quality care is a fundamental human right, yet many individuals face barriers due to disparities and inefficiencies. In this hackathon challenge, participants will tackle this pressing issue by developing a healthcare analytics dashboard. This dashboard will analyze patient demographics, health outcomes, and healthcare disparities to empower policymakers and healthcare providers to make informed decisions. Using a synthetic healthcare dataset designed to mimic real-world data, participants will showcase their data manipulation and analysis skills. Through their innovative solutions, participants will contribute to creating a more equitable and efficient healthcare system, ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need.

5.) Educational Outcome Prediction:

Imagine a world where every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, regardless of their background. In this hackathon challenge, participants will tackle this vision by building a predictive model to forecast student academic performance. By analyzing a comprehensive dataset that includes student grades, demographics, and school-related features from two Portuguese schools, participants will identify factors influencing educational outcomes. The goal is to empower educators and policymakers to implement targeted interventions and support services that help students succeed. With a strong correlation between past academic performance and final year grades, participants will develop innovative solutions that leverage predictive analytics to ensure every student reaches their full potential.
